Riot power, contd.

As word spread throughout Oakland around 2:30 p.m. that a verdict had been reached in the Johannes Mehserle murder trial, the downtown streets suddenly flooded with workers rushing out of their workplaces to go home.
The normally placid lanes were clogged, people hurried along the sidewalk, and there was an almost electric air of worried anticipation. BART trains streaming in and out of downtown were jammed, and nearby Interstates 880 and 980 filled as if it were already commute hour.
At the downtown federal building, announcements were made over loudspeakers to tell everyone to go home. At many of the big businesses throughout the area, internal e-mails and other notices went out advising the same.

Is there anyone in the relevant “community” disturbed that his fellow “community members” produce such an effect—only partly irrational—on society?

A white cop shoots an unarmed black man.
    Riots erupt.
A trial results in a “too lenient” sentence.
Anarchists, thugs, etc. take to the street…
… and loot, among other things, a Whole Foods.

This is soooo stereotypically Oakland it isn’t even funny. Oh, my beloved home city.

  2. OneSTDV says:

I wonder if any article will make mention of the race of the rioters. I’m thinking no.

  3. vgk says:

What race are they? My guess is that they’re Juden. ever since kristallnacht I’ve been afraid of the jews. Am I right?

  4. A-Bax says:

As if on cue, Nation-of-Cowards Holder is stepping in to “review” the case.

I suppose baton-wielding Black Panther voting-station thugs who talk about killing white babies don’t bother Holder as much as a jury-delivered verdict that is less severe than he would like.

  5. Caledonian says:

Why would they be disturbed? It’s a demonstration of the social power and influence their subgroup can wield.

It’s all about “empowerment”, which is a euphemism for approved bullying.

  6. Snippet says:

A conservative friend of mine – the sort of person who was conservative WAY before it was cool – told me, without a hint of irony that he thought affirmative action was necessary “to avoid riots.”

    He was completely serious.

Never, EVER underestimate the power of a group that is willing to inflict violence on those who make it unhappy.

    Just ask Spain.

  7. Don says:

This is an important dynamic for the right wing. The Watts riots were the precipitating event in my father’s journey from Democrat in the Truman mold to Reganism. He never looked back.

  8. Panglos says:

    VGK,

Some have been deathly afraid of Juden.

  9. Dain says:

It’s kind of fascinating to hear white people so terrified of riots, ensconced as they usually are nowhere near the rioting itself.

  10. Fain says:

Dain is right. Black people rioting? Nothing new here. Move along. And don’t forget to vote for amnesty.

  11. Anthony says:

vgk may have been more correct than (s)he knew. Most of the actual rioters (as opposed to the much larger crowd of demonstrators) were out-of-town agitators. (As successfully predicted by Zombie.) Given the demographics of far-left movements in the East Bay, it’s a good bet that some significant fraction of the rioters were jewish.
