I discuss an article by University of Virginia professor Vesla Weaver arguing that contact with the “carceral state” illegitimately depresses civic and political engagement in this Bloggingheads debate.

    Golly, it is such a shame that more ex-convicts aren’t going to community meetings and participating in politics, because ex-cons are well known for their support of limited government and the rule of law.
