Gabrielle Giffords

On this sad day I do want to observe that I am thankful we live in a nation where such tragedies of political violence are rare indeed.

I concur. I do think it should be said we don’t know this person’s motive for doing this…while it is likely, may not necessarily be political in nature. Or not the political motives we might think.

  2. Susan says:

The report of her death has been retracted as of 2:45 p.m., EST. The hospital says she is in critical condition, and in surgery.

  3. Susan says:

She survived the surgery, is responsive to doctors’ commands, and her chances of recovery are good.

I do not consider assassination to be a legitimate form of political expression. Our politicians are not worthy of assassination.

When I was young (say, early 80’s), I thought assassination would become quite common in the coming decades. Fortunately, I have been largely proven wrong.

Re: political violence, it’s indeed comforting that the U.S. is better off than in most parts of the world, including and especially Pakistan. But I’d feel much better if we had less political violence than England, France and Japan.

And we shouldn’t ignore the recent trend: the plane crash in the Texas IRS building, the church shooter in Tennessee, the Pittsburgh cop shootings, the Pentagon shooting, the Holocaust Museum shooting, the Tides Center killings, and the murder of the Kansas abortion doctor. Most if not all of these crimes were performed by political paranoiacs. Maybe this isn’t a trend, and such activities have always happened at the same frequency. Someone with a better sense of history can correct me if I’m mistaken. But it sure feels like an uptick to me. Whether it is or isn’t, I’m hoping it ends right here.

  6. Panglos says:

The Arizona shooter had no discernible politics
Consider that he was deranged and that his ideology was nothing more than a string of political buzzwords

  7. Polichinello says:

    sio,

Political killings are hardly anything new to this country. We’ve had four presidential assassinations by political extremists. We had five congressmen killed in the well of the House. We’ve had bombings, from Haymarket Square to the latest attempts in Maryland. Actually, on one front–riots–we’re in a relatively quiet period.

  8. J. says:

Lest we forget, Jared Whackton named Ayn Rand’s “We the Living” as one of his fave books, along with Mein Kampf, Plato, and Peter Pan . He claimed to be atheist and also ranted about his opposition to “fiat currency”.

Thus we can’t rule out…the Secular Right factor ..and Miss Rand’s writings as formative influences on the young assassin.

  9. jld says:

    Consider that he was deranged

Yes but why are so many US citizen “deranged”?
Which is more ominous, a political motive or none?

  10. Bruce says:

Good question, jld. I always say, “Why can’t we all just get a song?” As a psychologist, I’ve been trying to use this original song to get people focused on what’s really important, coming together to promote healing after this troubling event.
