{"id":8283,"date":"2013-01-29T23:20:45","date_gmt":"2013-01-29T23:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/?p=8283"},"modified":"2013-01-29T23:20:45","modified_gmt":"2013-01-29T23:20:45","slug":"first-amendment-second-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/first-amendment-second-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"First Amendment, Second Amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Economist<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/democracyinamerica\/2013\/01\/gun-control-debate?fsrc=scn\/tw\/te\/bl\/acatholicblock\">picks up<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithinpubliclife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Catholic-Stmt-on-Gun-Violence-1.23.12.pdf\">this letter<\/a> from 64 Roman Catholic theologians in favor of gun control.<\/p>\n<p>With so much talk of late of the supposed attack on religious freedom represented by Obamacare\u2019s contraception mandate, this passage caught my eye:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops recently renewed their call for measures to address gun violence by echoing their 2000 statement, Responsibility, Rehabilitation and Restoration: A Catholic Perspective on Crime and Criminal Justice. Bishops have called for \u201cmeasures that control the sale and use of firearms\u201d and \u201csensible regulations of handguns.\u201d The Vatican\u2019s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, in a 1994 document, \u201cThe International Arms Trade,\u201d urges political leaders \u201cto impose a strict control on the sale of handguns and small arms\u201d and states that \u201climiting the purchase of such arms would certainly not infringe on the rights of anyone.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s good to know where people stand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economist picks up on this letter from 64 Roman Catholic theologians in favor of gun control.
