Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said in an interview that he isn\u2019t certain what the age of the earth is, and that parents should be able to teach their kids both scientific and religious attempts to answer the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that\u2019s a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States,\u201d Rubio told GQ. \u201cI think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. I\u2019m not a scientist. I don\u2019t think I\u2019m qualified to answer a question like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Geological Survey notes that scientists have estimated the earth\u2019s age to be about 4.5 billion years old. Rubio, who identifies himself as Catholic, noted there are both faith-based and scientific theories about the earth\u2019s beginnings. He said that he is \u201cnot sure\u201d we will ever be able to fully answer the question of how old our planet is.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all,\u201d he added. \u201cI think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I\u2019m not sure we\u2019ll ever be able to answer that. It\u2019s one of the great mysteries.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
