The photos in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/08\/us\/08pray.html?_r=1\">article<\/a> show a black church, so I was skeptical that Democrats prayed as much as Republicans overall.  I looked at the PRAY variable in the GSS.  The N&#8217;s were huge, PARTYID and PRAY were asked of nearly 20,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Here&#8217;s the result for all races:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-667\" title=\"prayer\" src=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayer.jpg 516w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayer-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayer-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>OK, but what about whites?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayerwhite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-668\" title=\"prayerwhite\" src=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayerwhite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayerwhite.jpg 517w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayerwhite-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/prayerwhite-298x300.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I checked the PRIVPRAY and PRAYFREQ variables, and the same general trend. <strong>It seems people with strong party identities also pray more! \u00a0<\/strong>There is plenty of room for speculation, but I&#8217;ll leave that to readers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heather&#8217;s post about Democratic prayers for the bailout made me wonder about differences between the parties.
