{"id":6394,"date":"2011-09-29T02:03:49","date_gmt":"2011-09-29T02:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/?p=6394"},"modified":"2011-09-29T02:03:49","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T02:03:49","slug":"are-students-really-that-dumb-or-are-they-just-pretending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/are-students-really-that-dumb-or-are-they-just-pretending\/","title":{"rendered":"Are students really that dumb or are they just pretending?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I fail to grasp the deep personal insult allegedly sent by the Berkeley bake sale, unlike some commenters on this site.\u00a0 If you are offended by the idea of someone being offered a benefit based on his race, you should be out there with the Berkeley College Republicans protesting the likely overt reinstatement of preferences at the University of California (as opposed to their\u00a0covert use through\u00a0such anti-Prop 209 strategems as &#8220;holistic admissions&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0To me, as I write <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/2011\/cjc0928hm.html\">here<\/a>, the reaction to the bake sale exemplifies the narcissistic irrationality on the part of today&#8217;s students that university bureaucrats only pamper and amplify, thus creating a future cadre of self-engrossed adults who will continue to cry racism and sexism as they go through life:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Student Devonte Jackson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2011\/09\/25\/BACG1L9CP3.DTL#ixzz1ZFoav0Ce\" target=\"new\">told<\/a> the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> that the sale was inappropriate and hurtful, \u201cattacking underrepresented communities by reducing their communities to a cheaply priced good.\u201d The president of Berkeley\u2019s student government, which sponsored the pro-SB 185 phone bank, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/09\/26\/us\/california-racial-bake-sale\/index.html?hpt=hp_t2\" target=\"new\">explained<\/a> to CNN that the bake sale \u201chumorized and mocked the struggles of people of color on this campus.\u201d Another student government officer professed dismay at such a shocking insult to students of color. \u201cWe were really taken aback and, frankly, disgusted,\u201d Joey Freeman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-berkeley-bake-sale-20110927,0,3840239.story\" target=\"new\">informed<\/a> the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>. Capping off this outpouring of what one can only hope is willful misreading, the student senate passed an emergency resolution on Sunday condemning \u201cthe use of discrimination whether it is in satire or in seriousness by any student group.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who could take such a reaction seriously?\u00a0 Berkeley&#8217;s $194,000 vice chancellor for equity and diversity, that&#8217;s who:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA lot of students, especially students of color, read [the bake sale] as placing a higher value on white students,\u201d Gibor Basri told the <em>New York Times<\/em>. Basri, in other words, obeyed the ironclad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/2008\/18_1_campus_rape.html\" target=\"new\">script<\/a> for all such minor perturbations in the otherwise unbroken reign of campus political correctness.
