Michelle Goldberg obviously has a perspective which is at odds with Newt&#8217;s rhetoric, but didn&#8217;t he make a name for himself in the 1990s for his techno-libertarian optimism? \u00a0Additionally, I recall that Gingrich called for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tucsonobserver.com\/archives\/pdf\/1994\/11\/NOV%2030.pdf\">toleration of gays<\/a>\u00a0(PDF) in the Republican party in 1994. \u00a0If he&#8217;s laying the groundwork for a 2012 run perhaps he&#8217;s calculating how he needs to position himself for the primaries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a quick piece in TNR which reports that Newt\u00a0Gingrich is going into culture-war mode.
