Denise Giardina of Saint John\u2019s Episcopal Church, Charleston, WV, has come out with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohnswv.org\/pages\/sermon-inthename.htm\">snide little sermon<\/a> \u201cmatching\u201d the views of a writer (Ayn Rand) against those of a largely legendary figure (Jesus), one of His followers (St. Timothy) and a comedian (Stephen Colbert). The reverend claims to be staging something that she calls, with classic priestly selectivity, a \u201csmackdown\u201d between Ayn Rand and the Bible. It\u2019s actually nothing of the sort, but let that pass.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I should say that my enthusiasm for Ms. Rand is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysun.com\/arts\/strangely-important-figure\/8235\/\">somewhat<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/190138\/welcome-back-ms-rand\/andrew-stuttaford\">qualified<\/a>, and I thought that some of the \u2018Going Galt\u2019 chatter of a year or so back was distinctly overwrought. Nevertheless, let\u2019s just say that if anything is likely to increase my admiration for the sage of Murray Hill it is nonsense of the type apparently now being spouted from the pulpit of Saint John\u2019s Episcopal, Charleston, WV, but read the sermon and judge for yourselves. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com\/2011\/04\/ayn-rand-vs-jesus-christ.html\">Hat-tip: Andrew Sullivan<\/a>, who is using this sermon to attack Newt Gingrich for hypocrisy. Presumably Mr. Gingrich has being saying something favorable about Ayn Rand or the new <em>Atlas Shrugged<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/264927\/atlas-shrugged-movie-andrew-stuttaford\">movie<\/a>.
