{"id":5372,"date":"2011-02-12T15:49:13","date_gmt":"2011-02-12T15:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/?p=5372"},"modified":"2011-02-12T15:49:13","modified_gmt":"2011-02-12T15:49:13","slug":"a-trip-down-memory-lane-freedom-agenda-2005","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/a-trip-down-memory-lane-freedom-agenda-2005\/","title":{"rendered":"A trip down Memory Lane:  Freedom Agenda 2005"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If Obama had given the following speech, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin and the rest of the knee-jerk venom squad who are petulantly faulting the Obama Administration&#8217;s cautious response to\u00a0the Egyptian revolution\u00a0would have frothed at the presumption of such grandiose rhetoric.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall, however, the right-wing media offering a word of dissent from this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juntosociety.com\/inaugural\/gwbush2.html\">overheated Gersonian effusion <\/a>when Bush delivered it at his 2005 inauguration.\u00a0\u00a0 Nor would the Obama attack dogs have offered a peep of protest had Bush, in navigating the moral and political complexity of the Cairo uprising, offered his support to the Egyptian protesters, which would be the least that Bush could do if he really meant these self-righteous pronouncements:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nFrom the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth.\u00a0 . . . Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation . . . and the calling of our time.<\/p>\n<p>So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>We will persistently clarify the choice before every ruler and every nation: The moral choice between oppression, which is always wrong, and freedom, which is eternally right.\u00a0 . . .<\/p>\n<p>We will encourage reform in other governments by making clear that success in our relations will require the decent treatment of their own people. America&#8217;s belief in human dignity will guide our policies . . .<\/p>\n<p>All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you. . . .
