I was wrong, it looks as if Christine O&#8217;Donnell had an evangelical phase, and if my chronology is correct she was an evangelical Protestant Christian when this video was made. She later converted back to Roman Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Economist<\/em> points out the strangeness of Christine O&#8217;Donnell, Republican candidate for the Senate from Delaware, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/democracyinamerica\/2010\/09\/odonnells_religion\">promoting Creationism<\/a>, when as a Roman Catholic there&#8217;s no religious necessity for her to do so. Now, there&#8217;s no reason that a Catholic can&#8217;t be a Creationist, but I think Christine O&#8217;Donnell&#8217;s attitude makes more sense when you listen to her inveighing against masturbation:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/RzHcqcXo_NA?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/RzHcqcXo_NA?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>She speaks like a Protestant, making explicit reference to the Bible many times.<\/strong> Intellectual American Catholics are wont to observe that while Protestants believe in the Bible (at least Low Church Protestants), Catholics believe in the Church (granted, Catholics obviously believe in the Bible as well, but do not adhere to the notion of <em>sola scriptura<\/em>). I think O&#8217;Donnell&#8217;s idiosyncrasies are totally understandable in light of the assimilation of American religionists to specific subcultures, <b>whatever their notional sect.<\/b> American Roman Catholicism has long been &#8220;Protestant&#8221; in its orientation on a de facto level. While liberal Catholics align with mainline Protestants and use the language of social justice, conservative populist Catholics like Christine O&#8217;Donnell use the language of evangelical Protestants, for whom everything is &#8220;Biblically based.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: Ignore this post.
