{"id":464,"date":"2008-12-04T12:28:18","date_gmt":"2008-12-04T20:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=464"},"modified":"2008-12-05T18:28:21","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T02:28:21","slug":"micklethwait-and-wooldridge-on-american-conservatism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/micklethwait-and-wooldridge-on-american-conservatism\/","title":{"rendered":"Micklethwait and Wooldridge on American conservatism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economist&#8217;s blog Democracy in America <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/democracyinamerica\/2008\/12\/who_are_you_calling_conservati.cfm\">notices us<\/a>, and one of its commenters says: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To quote the distillation of Burke&#8217;s principles found in Mr [John] Micklethwait and Mr [Adrian] Wooldridge&#8217;s book on the subject [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1594200203\">The Right Nation: Conservative Power in America<\/a>, 2004], conservatism consists of &#8220;a deep suspicion of the power of the state; a preference for liberty over equality; patriotism; a belief in established institutions and hierarchies; skepticism about the idea of progress; and elitism&#8221; &#8211; with American conservatism emphasizing the first three.<\/p>\n<p>There appears to be room for secularists in this definition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That description is a bit misleading, because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/comment\/micklethwait_wooldridge200406150848.asp\">in M&#038;W&#8217;s view<\/a> modern American conservatism not merely de-emphasizes but reverses the last three items on the list.
