{"id":3742,"date":"2010-02-01T15:56:56","date_gmt":"2010-02-01T23:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=3742"},"modified":"2010-02-02T06:41:05","modified_gmt":"2010-02-02T14:41:05","slug":"fathers-and-the-fertility-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/fathers-and-the-fertility-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Fathers and the fertility revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I consider <a href=\"http:\/\/article.nationalreview.com:80\/423469\/reengineering-the-family\/heather-mac-donald\">here <\/a>whether there are any arguments left that one might make regarding absent fathers&#8217; obligation to their biological children once the fertility revolution that enables gay procreation is moved to the center of the marriage institution.\u00a0 I am very sympathetic to the compelling interest in marriage, but anyone who claims that gay marriage will not have a huge, unforeseeable effect on society is either deluded or in bad faith.\u00a0 One could well decide that the demand for marriage participation rightly trumps any countervailing considerations.\u00a0 I tend more and more in that direction myself.\u00a0 But let&#8217;s at least be honest about the massiveness of this change and our own ignorance regarding its fallout:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The facile libertarian argument that gay marriage is a trivial matter that affects only the parties involved is astoundingly blind to the complexity of human institutions and to the web of sometimes imperceptible meanings and practices that compose them. Equally specious is the central theme in attorney Theodore Olson\u2019s legal challenge to California\u2019s Proposition 8: that only religious belief or animus towards gays could explain someone\u2019s hesitation regarding gay marriage.
