{"id":262,"date":"2008-11-29T21:50:28","date_gmt":"2008-11-30T05:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=262"},"modified":"2008-12-05T17:44:03","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T01:44:03","slug":"homeland-security-in-kentucky-no-secularists-wanted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/homeland-security-in-kentucky-no-secularists-wanted\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeland security in Kentucky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nice to know Kentucky&#8217;s state legislature has its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/210\/story\/608229.html\">priorities straight<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 2006 law organizing the state Office of Homeland Security lists its initial duty as &#8220;stressing the dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the Commonwealth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Homeland Security is ordered to publicize God&#8217;s benevolent protection in its reports, and it must post a plaque at the entrance to the state Emergency Operations Center with an 88-word statement that begins, &#8220;The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God.&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As amended, Homeland Security&#8217;s religious duties now come before all else, including its distribution of millions of dollars in federal grants and its analysis of possible threats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The language in question was inserted into the bill by State Rep. Tom Riner, a Southern Baptist minister, and overwhelmingly approved by lawmakers two years ago. Social Services for Feral Children <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feralchild.net\/?p=833\">writes<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That must explain why Kentucky has fared so well in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
