{"id":2132,"date":"2009-06-08T15:25:40","date_gmt":"2009-06-08T23:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=2132"},"modified":"2009-06-08T15:25:40","modified_gmt":"2009-06-08T23:25:40","slug":"religious-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/religious-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heather, I&#8217;ll admit to being a fan of quite a lot of religious art from the masterpieces of the (early) Renaissance to the blood, bile and hellfire of some of the Flemish to, \u00a0for that matter, \u00a0the radiant gloom of so many Russian icons,\u00a0 so perhaps I&#8217;m biased.\u00a0 Nevertheless,\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure that you can write &#8216;religious art&#8217; out of the picture (so to speak) as quickly as you suggest.\u00a0 As a proportion of the art being produced,\u00a0 it certainly declined,\u00a0\u00a0for some of the reasons cited by you and your commenters (commentators?)\u00a0 and others besides. These include shifts in taste, the rise of Protestantism, relaxed religious controls, the fact that there was already so much religious art around, and so on.\u00a0 At the same time (and if we&#8217;re talking about Europe), it continued to survive and flourish both in the Orthodox East and, also most notably, Victorian England.\u00a0 Some of the work produced in the latter may come across as doggerel when compared with the high poetry of Caspar David Friedrich (a painter to whom I think you implicitly refer in your post), but it was religious nonetheless &#8211; and an <a href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_m1026\/is_6_160\/ai_80864305\/\" target=\"_blank\">important part <\/a>of the backdrop to one of the most prosperous and, eventually,\u00a0 law-abiding eras in British history.<\/p>\n<p>If we move on into the twentieth century, we see that religious art continues to flourish (as it always will, given human nature),\u00a0\u00a0most strikingly\u00a0in the service of the political religions of National Socialism and early-to-mid period Soviet communism (both of which cults, but particularly the latter,\u00a0 made extensive use of devotional imagery),\u00a0 a process that rapidly spread beyond Europe, \u00a0notably into the China of the Cultural Revolution.
