{"id":193,"date":"2008-11-28T10:31:22","date_gmt":"2008-11-28T18:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=193"},"modified":"2008-12-05T17:15:35","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T01:15:35","slug":"193","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/193\/","title":{"rendered":"Oogedy-Boogedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ron Guhname, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/inductivist.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/parkers-brilliant-strategy-for-gop.html\">The Inductivist<\/a>,&#8221; is scathing about Kathleen Parker&#8217;s now-famous \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/11\/18\/AR2008111802886.html\">oogedy-boogedy<\/a>&#8221; column.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>New York City Republicans should become the center of the party. That there are six of them and 100 million born-agains isn&#8217;t the point; the NYC-ers are cooler.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like Ron&#8217;s style, and I thought Kathleen&#8217;s column showed the ugly face of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnderbyshire.com\/Opinions\/USPolitics\/metrocons.html\">metroconservatism<\/a>.\u00a0 She was right to this degree, though:\u00a0 the extremes of religious enthusiasm repel a lot of people who favor general conservative principles.\u00a0 I meet those people all the time.\u00a0 They generally end up with a grudging vote for the GOP, if they bother to turn out (and there isn&#8217;t a Libertarian on the ticket), and Ron is right that their numbers are not currently convincing enough for GOP strategists to start saying to candidates:\u00a0 &#8220;Tone down the God stuff, for God&#8230;, er, I mean, for goodness&#8217; sake.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u00a0might change in a few election cycles,\u00a0though; as, of course,\u00a0might the preferences of evangelicals, who don&#8217;t vote Republican because they want small government and fiscal restraint, but from hostility to the greater social liberalism of the Democrats.\u00a0 (I probably\u00a0should have said\u00a0&#8220;<em>white<\/em> evangelicals&#8221; there.)\u00a0\u00a0 As Jonah Goldberg says: &#8220;The Religious Right will stop being Right before they stop being Religious.&#8221;\u00a0 So far as conservatives are concerned, evangelicals are fair-weather friends.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a tough circle to square.\u00a0 The GOP alliance of irreligious conservatives\u00a0with religious haters of social liberalism\u00a0may not be stable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In any case,\u00a0we on the secular Right have to understand, as Kathleen plainly doesn&#8217;t, how marginal we are in the big antler-clashings of national politics.\u00a0 Currently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ron Guhname, &#8220;The Inductivist,&#8221; is scathing about Kathleen Parker&#8217;s now-famous \u00a0&#8220;oogedy-boogedy&#8221; column.
