{"id":1792,"date":"2009-04-01T14:04:11","date_gmt":"2009-04-01T22:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=1792"},"modified":"2009-04-01T14:07:12","modified_gmt":"2009-04-01T22:07:12","slug":"moral-reasoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/moral-reasoning\/","title":{"rendered":"Moral Reasoning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a debate on the internet about homosexuality and morality, with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/crunchycon\/2009\/03\/dreher-linker-sullivan-on-gay.html\">Rod Dreher<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com\/\">Andrew Sullivan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.tnr.com\/tnr\/blogs\/linker\/archive\/2009\/03\/26\/how-to-argue-about-homosexuality.aspx\">Damon Linker<\/a> at the center of the storm. \u00a0Nothing too surprising or unexpected. \u00a0All I would add is that this is a sort of thing where reasoned arguments, that is, inferences from axioms, are probably overrated. \u00a0The traditionalist and socially liberal voices in any sort of argument have to, by the nature of the beast, engage in structured debates which take as given axioms (e.g., the Bible, individual liberty) which result in a host of propositions. But this is ultimately just shadow-boxing, as an empirical matter social norms evolve over time through changes in the <em>Zeitgeist <\/em>which humans have a minimal comprehension of (probably because they are the <em>Zeitgeist<\/em>). \u00a0Two generations ago traditionalists and social liberals would probably agree on their attitudes toward homosexuality, but not on the acceptability of women in the work place. \u00a0Their premises, ostensibily derived from scripture and the Enlightenment, would be the same. \u00a0But the terminal points which define the set of public policy and social positions which define the two camps would be very different.
