A mob with her father at its head pounded and hammered at the door as she cowered upstairs hoping she could not be seen or heard. She heard her father shout through the letter box: \u201cFilthy traitor! Betrayer of your faith! Cursed traitor! We\u2019re going to rip your throat out! We\u2019ll burn you alive!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Does she still believe they would have killed her? \u201cYes, without a doubt. They had hammers and knives and axes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Why didn\u2019t you call the police after-wards? \u201cFirst, I didn\u2019t think the police would believe me. That sort of thing just doesn\u2019t happen in this country \u2013 or that\u2019s what they\u2019d think. Second, I didn\u2019t believe I would get help or protection from the authorities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Hannah had good reason for this doubt\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed she did.
