Had I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/comment\/4413752\/When-theyre-gone-well-all-be-struggling-with-English.html\">this story<\/a> before sending in my copy, I would have been more restrained.  Apparently the apostrophe is in danger.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[T]he fashionable clique of modern grammarians\u00a0\u2026 has the apostrophe in its sights. Prominent among this bunch are the likes of John Wells, emeritus professor of phonetics at University College London, who argues that strict rules of spelling and grammar &#8220;hold children back,&#8221; and the linguist Kate Burridge, author of <em>Weeds in the Garden of Words<\/em>, who wants the possessive apostrophe scrapped. Prof Wells wants to replace the apostrophe with a blank space\u00a0\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conservatives should of course rally round established usage.  <em>Aux armes, citoyennes!<\/em> Save the apostrophe!  There must be a few big names we can enlist in support.  Bill O&#8217;Reilly, perhaps, or Dinesh D&#8217;Souza, or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerardus_%27t_Hooft\">this guy<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janetdubois.com\/index.html\">this gal<\/a>, or someone from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San%E2%80%98a%E2%80%99\">here<\/a> \u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have some Derbishly mean-spirited (I hope!) remarks about the cavalier use of apostrophes in my upcoming month-end diary on NRO.
