{"id":125,"date":"2008-11-26T08:30:11","date_gmt":"2008-11-26T16:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=125"},"modified":"2008-12-05T15:03:42","modified_gmt":"2008-12-05T23:03:42","slug":"settling-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/settling-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Settling In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someone has asked me why I am contributing under a pen-name, since the first thing I did was to tell the whole world <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnderbyshire.com\/\">who I am<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 I thought it would be neat to have a pen-name.\u00a0 I had some vague ideas about anonymity, too.\u00a0 As soon as I started blogging, though, I realized that I would not be able to resist linking to a lot of my own stuff; and in any case, friends tell me my style is unmistakable.\u00a0 So I guess there wasn&#8217;t much point.<\/p>\n<p>Walter has pointed out the downsides of blogging under a pen-name:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reader confusion.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of recognition for one&#8217;s work.<\/li>\n<li>The blogosphere&#8217;s general devaluing of anonymous commentary.<\/li>\n<li>Giving one&#8217;s opponents an opening to hint that one is hiding something.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I guess he&#8217;s right.\u00a0 Having started out as Bradlaugh, though, I shall continue until some negative consequence ensues, then rethink.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nice, in any case, to give a little publicity to Bradlaugh, beneath whose statue the teenage me learned to smoke cigarettes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someone has asked me why I am contributing under a pen-name, since the first thing I did was to tell the whole world who I am.
