{"id":1166,"date":"2009-01-06T08:39:41","date_gmt":"2009-01-06T16:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/wordpress\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2009-01-06T08:39:41","modified_gmt":"2009-01-06T16:39:41","slug":"the-elizabeth-dole-atheism-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/the-elizabeth-dole-atheism-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"The Elizabeth Dole &#8220;atheism&#8221; ad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before the 2008 election cycle entirely passes into history, let&#8217;s take note of the TV ad that, according to some, helped seal Elizabeth Dole&#8217;s loss in her effort to hold on to her North Carolina Senate seat for the GOP:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1lf2vDk-4Ag&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1lf2vDk-4Ag&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>If this sort of thing goes over badly with voters in North Carolina, a state with strong evangelical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/uniontrib\/20060502\/news_lz1n2thelist.html\">church attendance<\/a> and long the base of Sen. Jesse Helms, it&#8217;s hard to see it as a viable strategy nationwide. (And don&#8217;t write it off as an isolated lapse of some Dole staffers, either: as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y5AsdYWtKLY\">YouTube confirms<\/a>, the official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrsc.org\/\">National Republican Senatorial Committee<\/a> was hip-deep in the strategy.) At the moment there&#8217;s intense interest in the race for chairman of the Republican National Committee, in which organized religious conservatives seem to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/blogs\/god-and-country\/2009\/01\/05\/race-for-republican-national-committee-chairman-will-determine-christian-rights-influence.html\">placed their chips<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cleveland.com\/openers\/2009\/01\/ken_blackwell_hopes_to_lead_re.html\">former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell<\/a> (who&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/0109\/Top_conservatives_back_Blackwell.html\">also drawn support<\/a> from some more secular figures on the right). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cqpolitics.com\/wmspage.cfm?docID=news-000003002671\">Other figures in the RNC race<\/a> include former Maryland Lt. Gov.
