{"id":10735,"date":"2018-08-20T23:28:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T23:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/?p=10735"},"modified":"2018-08-20T23:31:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T23:31:25","slug":"the-difference-between-berkeley-and-nyc-is-collapsing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/the-difference-between-berkeley-and-nyc-is-collapsing\/","title":{"rendered":"The Difference Between Berkeley and NYC is Collapsing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wicca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10736\" src=\"http:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wicca-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wicca.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wicca-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/secularright.org\/SR\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wicca-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The New York Times<\/em> recently published a piece on Wiccans in New York City, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/16\/nyregion\/witchcraft-in-the-metoo-era.html\">Witchcraft in the #MeToo Era<\/a>.&#8221; Despite the name, the article has nothing to do with #MeToo &#8211; there are no tales or even allusions to Wiccan women under the spell of nefarious Wiccan men &#8211; but instead highlights the practice of paganism and Wicca in Goth-am from a vaguely female perspective:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Manhattan, family-oriented witches attend the Wiccan Family Temple with their children. The Temple of the Spiral Path, also based in Manhattan, offers workshops and an introductory witch\u2019s academy that meets weekly. New York\u2019s pagan couples can be married by legally ordained Wiccan ministers offering their services on The Witches\u2019 Voice; there\u2019s even a Wicca e-group based in the Bronx.\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/17\/nyregion\/witches-dance-at-catland-occult-bookstore-in-bushwick.html\">Catland Books<\/a>, an occult bookshop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, offers weekly workshops, drawing a younger, trendier crowd.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\/forum\/city-vs-city\/1184731-best-city-pagans-2.html\">City-Data forum<\/a>, the best metros in the U.S. to be Wiccan and\/or pagan is\u00a0New Orleans, New York City, Salem (shocker!), the Bay Area and Minneapolis\/St.Paul. I&#8217;m surprised the Pacific Northwest doesn&#8217;t appear in the list, given its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/faith\/2015\/08\/where_the_religious_nones_roam.html\">post-religious<\/a> susceptibility to non-traditional (or in this case <em>hyper<\/em> traditional, it can be argued) and new-agey spirituality. Conversely, the inclusion of New Orleans may seem odd given the south&#8217;s Pentecostal and Evangelical-driven hostility toward the occult; but then &#8220;Nola&#8221; has a fairly unique history, and is far more Catholic today than a city like Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>This passage doesn&#8217;t make Wiccans look especially serious:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On a recent Friday night, the witches of the Temple of the Spiral Path gathered to watch the spunky teenage witches in &#8220;The Craft.&#8221; The Temple occasionally hosts pagan movie nights. This one drew eight people \u2014 a few coven members and friends, to a Midtown dance studio where the group often meets.\u00a0JoAnna Farrer, 34, and her husband, had never seen the 1996 cult classic, a supernatural horror film following a teenager who falls in with a clique of witches.
